As for Richardson, no I don't like him and I don't think he is anywhere near good enough. But, at the same time, he is sadly the only right-back at the club. Kenton was fantastic last year but disappeared off the radar before leaving. Is Telfer a right back? I thought he was a centre back. Well he certainly looked like one on Tuesday. If he is a right back then it's Michalik and Marques in the centre with Telfer on the right.

I'd maybe be tempted to go for Aidan White at right back but he is a left footer so could be risky.

Also, if you don't like Richardson, why have you picked him in your starting 11? I say we'd be better with Telfer there - at least he doesn't panic and whack the ball anywhere in Gary Kelly-esque fashion when under pressure...

Agree about Kilkenny though - making of a Leeds legend if he gets a consecutive run of 20 or 30 games under his belt I'm sure it will make us a strong force for promotion.

I made R to D in about 12 hours, I think. I thought there were a lot of positive things to take from the first half in particular - the defence were well organised and cut out most danger, we dominated possession and although we didn't create many clear cut chances there were some nice moves (one in particular springs to mind where the final through pass to Robinson was just intercepted in their area after some nice touches around their box).

Unfortunately after some comedy defending in the second half it all went tits up and having gone behind we never looked like coming back.

However... I think that Oldham will be one of the sides to watch this season and, whilst it is never nice to start the home season by losing, I suspect if we play like that against most teams we'll end up beating them.

Think my biggest downer of the day was the fact that Enoch is clearly the new Tresor (although that shouldn't be a surprise given some of the things I saw about him over the summer). And the way he just ambled off when subbed, at 2-0 down, was not a good sign!

We'll see what happens re: douglas. We have a million midfielders to choose from. Squad looks good, but my concern is we only have 3 cenre backs in rui, lubo and huntington. As this is a common position to get suspensions and injuries in, it will be useful to buy one more. (unless andrew hughes can fill in at centre back??)

Interesting comments re Douglas. I agree that he must be on his way and quite frankly, I am not bothered. Howson is a must start, which leaves one spot for Kilkenny, Prutton, Johnson (potentially) or, after Saturday's cameo, Delph, who looks incredibly gifted. I also thought Prutton was superb in centre mid.

Douglas is sluggish, has poor distribution and lacks energy.

As for strikers, I was shocked to read the YEP online praising the performance of Showaddy Waddy. What a pile of pants and a proper ow my ankle. Can't shoot and can't win anything in the air. He must be a squad player at best, with Beccio to play with Beckford or Freedman or another signing. Personally I would have Robbo off Beckford and then Johnson, Howson, Kilkenny/Delph and Prutton behind.

Also, Fraser out PLEASE. Utter rubbish, 2 mistakes in their goal and another howler in the first half. Telfer would be a more reliable option or Scott Garder or Rob Bayly, who looked alright.

Nice article. I like the theory about 3 years lag for every 1 year out of the prem - but I don't agree with it. The top four in the prem are indeed years away from us today, but history suggests it won't last. Wait for Ferguson to retire. Wait for Wenger to fall foul of his French North African recruitment policy. Wait for Abramovich and George Gillet to get bored of their toys. Wait for Blatter and Platini to instigate their English club hating legistlative regimes. Then the top flight opens up again and order will be restored. I reckon all that will occur within 5 years. By that point, we should have achieved successive promotions, and whilst we'll be minnows financially, the football will be on a more level playing field.

And on the team selection, I don't see the point of having either Elding or Kandol on the bench. Neither of them will be with us next season (all being well), and neither of them are likely to change the game if we need them to.

Better off bringing in a couple of the highly rated youth players to gain the experience of playing at Wembley and perhaps add something lively and unpredictable to the game should we need it - maybe Delph or even Tom "AreyouPeterCrouchindisguise" Elliot?

Great article! I stood in disbelief last night at the sheer lack of professionalism. Billy Bremner... lose the ball... got to win it back at all costs ... got to support the team anywhere and everywhere on the park... Douglas... stroll around a bit, make tackles that aren't going to win the ball... make a mistake... stand and watch... what hope do we have with such professionalism and commitment to Leeds United?

Wizzy - good article - agree with most of it. The 2 biggest issues last night were a) wrong team selection by gary mac (e.g. bradley at left back), and b) for some reason the big occasion got to our players, but not carlisles

Ironically, I think we have a better chance in the 2nd leg because we're playing away in a less pressurised environment.

You may remember that we got through the Preston semi-final in spite of far more mind games than we've had from Carlisle - Billy Davies doing his best impression of Alex Ferguson. It didn't hamper us then, and it will not hamper us this time. The truth was, Preston simply weren't good enough to get out of the division, and neither were we.

This time around, it is abundantly clear that we are good enough - Carlisle are just scrambling around for an edge they need to overcome us.

Incredible that the hidden agenda was so well disguised. League 2! The -15 points syndrome has driven the fans and players in the first half of the season - an electrifying atmosphere the like of which I have not experienced in all the time I have watched/supported United since 1956.
The highs and lows - league 2 or the Championship!! Here's hoping the players earn their money and do us (the supporters) proud. We don't deserve anything less.
